exhibition text"Hello My Name Is" is a piece inspired by the contemporary art movement. Using acrylic paint and stickers on a three foot by three foot canvas, I wanted to create a self portrait that reflects who I am and my style as an artist. Taking influence from Barbara Kruger allowed me to not only incorporate my preferred art style, but it also allowed me to remain coherent with the theme of identity that I have been focusing on portraying in my pieces.

artistic inspirationI personally love the simplicity yet symbolic meanings found with modern art pieces. That is why I have always been naturally drawn to the works of Barbara Kruger. With 'Hello My Name Is’ I was inspired by the works of Barbara Kruger and an online artist who goes by Rakkadeer. Kruger portrays the ideas of originality that is hard to come by with modern advertising and artworks. She shows this in his works by duplicating well known images that tend to challenge originality that is found in pop culture. Rakkadeer often expresses desire in his pieces. They portray desire in his works through surreal images, usually of people, who seem to have desires that they cannot reach or obtain. I was influenced by both Kruger's and Rakkadeer’s ideas, wanting to mash both the concept of originality and desire together. With the overall look of the portrait, I wanted to show Rakkadeer as an obvious influence portraying how my piece is hackneyed and lacking originality. With the main theme of identity, I wanted to express Kruger’s ideas of desire. I wanted this image to represent how the inferior version of myself desires individuality and looks for guidance towards the superior version of myself who acquires individuality and confidently expresses this.

research
Identity and how it is used in Kruger's work:
- Kruger’s You Are Not Yourself makes visual and explicit De Beauvoir’s conception of woman as a non-essential social construct.
- Kruger interprets the myth of woman as a mechanism by which to alienate woman not only from man, but from herself as well
- Individuals are responsible for their own positions in life
- In psychology, sociology, anthropology and philosophy, identity is the conception, qualities, beliefs, and expressions that make a person or group
- Identity may be distinguished from identification; identity is a label, whereas identification refers to the classifying act itself
- Identity is thus best construed as being both relational and contextual, while the act of identification is best viewed as a process, either creative or destructive

Planning:
At the beginning of the creating process, I had a completely different idea in mind. I wanted to more so portray identity with Paul Gauguin being a main influence. I then thought it would be better to stick with a modern artist in order to portray identity while still sticking to the art style that I am goin for. combine. I decided to combine the concepts of identity with both Kruger and Rakkadeer as influences. Process:
