VIXEN
Medium: found object/junk sculpture
Size 36cm x 36cm

exhibition textVixen is a found object piece inspired by the Neo-Dada movement. Using faux flower pieces on a car rim, I wanted to create an assemblage sculpture that conveys misogyny in the music industry, especially found in hip hop culture. Hip hop is known to glorify and justify the exploitation and objectification of women, using lyrics that often internalize negative stereotypes to assert masculinity. This piece is intended to display the double standards found in hip hop culture

Artistic inspirationFor this project, I wanted to put together discarded or "junk" material to transform a seemingly simple object into a whole new form. I was instantly drawn to artists known for their uses of castoff materials, such as John Chamberlain. Chamberlain often used old automobile parts to create pieces that conveyed the three-dimensional form of Abstract Expressionism. With his pieces Amaryllis and Pastoraldebris, he creates a floral-like sculptures out of steel material with colorful hues. I was inspired by this specific piece with the way Chamberlain brings a feminine and soft feel to industrialized material. For the overall idea for my piece, I wanted to somehow incorporate flowers to represent femininity the way that Chamberlain did. My intended idea was to combine delicate with rugged, or organic with industrial, in order to portray women of the industry as strong while still having feminine qualities.
