monopoly
Medium: acrylic on canvas
Size: 60.96cm x 30.48cm
Completed: February 2015
exhibition textMonopoly is a triptych piece inspired by the Pop Art Movement. Using acrylic paint on stretched canvases, I wanted to portray how modern technology influences our society. I wanted to portray women in these pieces in order to reflect how I am personally affected by the influences of modern technology, whether positive or negative. Vulnerability of influence is also represented with the use of naked figures.

Artistic inspiration
With 'Monoply’ I was inspired by the works of Roy Lichtenstein and an online artist from tumblr who calls his page "Notalkingplz". Lichtenstein portrays the ideas of modern influence that is hard to come by with modern advertising and artworks. He shows this in his works by duplicating well known images that tend to challenge originality that is found in pop culture. "Notalkingplz" often expresses desire in his pieces. They portray desire in his works through surreal images, usually of people, who seem to have desires that they cannot reach or obtain. I was influenced by both Lichtenstein's and "Notalkingplz"’s ideas, wanting to mash both the concept of originality and desire together. With the overall look of the portrait, I wanted to show "Notalkingplz" as an obvious influence portraying how my piece is hackneyed and lacking originality. With the main theme of identity, I wanted to express Lichtenstein's ideas of desire. I wanted this image to represent how the modern day influence of technology can affect our society.

research
Modern Technology Influence:
- Technology and society or technology and culture refers to cyclical co-dependence, co-influence, and co-production of technology and society upon the other (technology upon culture, and vice versa)
- This synergistic relationship occurred from the dawn of humankind, with the invention of simple tools and continues into modern technologies such as the printing press and computers.

Planning:
I had a lot of ideas for this project, but couldn't come to terms with a final idea until last minute. I originally wanted to focus on surrealism and was inspired by Kay Sage before settling with my final designs. Process:
